The Inuit are an aboriginal people who are indigenous to the Canadian Arctic. Their art depicts the natural environment of the Arctic, traditional Inuit life, folklore, mythology and religion.

The sculpture is descended from the ancient craft of carving that goes back some 4,000 years of human habitation in the Canadian Arctic. The most popular carving material is stone. Types of stone used include serpentine, siltstone, argillite, dolomite, quartz and marble. Colors range from dull grey to luscious, almost semi-precious greens, whites, blue-greens and blacks.
