The Mohawk were one of the original Five Nations forming the famed Iroquois Confederacy, which dates back to at least 1600.
Pottery, as a Native Indian craft, has its origins long before the fur trade shattered the social and cultural structure of the Eastern Woodland tribes. When the fur traders introduced metal pots for cooking, the art of forming and decorating pottery faded out of existence.
The art form was revived in the late 1950's. These contemporary pieces are modern versions of the ancient. They are more elaborate for decorative purposes. Geometric and circular designs and textures, symbolic of the energy and life force of the universe, are carved into the sphere of clay. The pottery symbolizes the earth from which it was made; a small earth.
